Periyar Lake boating is one of the best-known experiences in Thekkady. You board a boat inside Periyar Tiger Reserve, travel across the lake and watch the forested shoreline for birds and wildlife. It sounds simple, but the trip needs more planning than many first-time visitors expect. PTR and KTDC sell separate tickets, additional reserve charges may apply, and the reporting process starts well before the boat leaves.

What Is the Periyar Lake Boating Experience Like?
The cruise begins at the Boat Landing inside Periyar Tiger Reserve. As the boat moves away from the jetty, the view opens across the lake, grasslands, forested slopes and the distinctive tree trunks rising from the water.
The PTR boating programme lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Passengers must remain seated during the cruise while observing the lake and shoreline from the boat.
Depending on the season and animal movement, you may occasionally see elephants, sambar deer, gaur, wild boar or smooth-coated otters near the shore. Darters, egrets, kingfishers and other birds may also be spotted around the lake.
Come with realistic expectations, though. Periyar is a natural wildlife habitat, not a zoo. Animals move freely within the reserve, and it is not guaranteed that they will appear during your particular trip.
On some cruises, there may be noticeable wildlife movement near the shoreline. On others, the experience is mainly about the birds, open water and views across the surrounding forest.
PTR and KTDC Boating: What Is the Difference?
This is where many visitors become confused.
PTR stands for Periyar Tiger Reserve. Its boating programme is offered through the reserve’s ecotourism system.
KTDC stands for Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. It operates separate boats and sells tickets through its own booking platform.
The two tickets are not interchangeable. Prices, seat availability, child-ticket rules and booking conditions are managed separately.

The higher KTDC fare does not necessarily mean a longer route, better wildlife sightings or a more premium cruise. Choose according to seat availability, ticket conditions and the departure time that fits your schedule.

The official PTR boating page does not clearly state the age range covered by the child fare. Families should confirm the applicable age before booking.
KTDC boating fare
KTDC currently lists:
- ₹450 per reserved seat
- 18% GST included
- No reserved ticket required for children below five
- Forest entry purchased separately
KTDC passengers must reach the Boat Landing at least 30 minutes before departure.
Is the boat ticket the complete cost?
Not always.
Depending on the operator and booking, you may also need to pay for:
- Entry to Periyar Tiger Reserve
- Parking
- Reserve-bus or shuttle transportation
- Camera charges, where applicable
Before completing payment, check exactly what the ticket includes. The displayed boating fare should not automatically be treated as the complete cost of the visit.
Periyar Lake Boating Timings
PTR currently lists five daily departure times:
- 7:30 a.m.
- 9:30 a.m.
- 11:15 a.m.
- 1:45 p.m.
- 3:30 p.m.
Schedules may change because of weather, maintenance or reserve instructions. Follow the time printed on your confirmed ticket and reconfirm the trip during periods of heavy rain or uncertain weather.
Do not plan to arrive a few minutes before departure.
PTR passengers must report at the ticket counter at the Anavachal parking area one hour before the cruise. They must then reach the Boat Landing at least 30 minutes before departure.

KTDC passengers must also reach the Boat Landing at least 30 minutes before departure. The common parking area is not the final reporting point.
How Do You Reach the Boat Landing?
Private vehicles cannot continue to the Boat Landing.
Visitors must park at Anavachal, approximately four kilometers away, and use the reserve buses to reach the jetty. This is why the reporting instructions should be taken seriously.
Although the PTR cruise lasts approximately 1.5 hours, allow considerably longer for the complete outing. Parking, reserve entry, bus travel, reporting, boarding and the return journey all take additional time.
Avoid scheduling another attraction immediately after boating, especially when travelling with children or older family members.
How to Book Periyar Boating Tickets
PTR and KTDC use separate booking systems, so confirm the operator before making payment.
Tickets can be reserved through the official PTR boating page or the official KTDC boating platform.
Advance booking is advisable during weekends, public holidays and busy travel periods. Before confirming your reservation, check:
- Travel date and departure time
- Operator name
- Number of seats
- Child-ticket conditions
- Reporting point and time
- Additional charges
- Cancellation and refund conditions
PTR passengers must carry the identification document used during online booking. Do not assume that same-day counter tickets will be available when boating is an important part of your itinerary.
What Is the Best Time for Periyar Lake Boating?
For many travellers, the 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. departures are convenient because the weather is generally cooler and there is still time for other activities later in the day.
The first trip requires passengers to report at Anavachal by 6:30 a.m. Families with young children may find the 9:30 a.m. departure easier to manage.

Photography, Safety and What to Carry
Wildlife may appear briefly, so keep your camera or phone accessible but secure. A wrist strap, binoculars or a moderate zoom lens can be useful.
Remain seated, avoid leaning over the boat and keep noise and flash photography to a minimum. Life jackets are mandatory. Follow the crew’s instructions, supervise children carefully and do not feed wildlife, smoke, litter or carry flammable materials. Bring your booking confirmation, required identification, sun and rain protection, necessary medication and drinking water where permitted.
